If I did not walk with my Insurance card, would I be allowed to visit the doctor?

Yes, but you will have to pay all charges since there is not any proof that you are Insured.  Employees should at all times walk with their Insurance cards and their company's ID card as well, if one is available.

I just had a baby.  I would like the baby to see a doctor, can I use my Insurance card?

No.  In order to use your Insurance card, you need to have your baby registered with the Health Insurance Plan.  Once registered, your baby can begin to receive the benefits provided by the plan.

How often do I have to sign an Insurance form?

Every time you visit the doctor you should sign an Insurance form.

I visited the doctor during the day but continued to feel unwell.  I decided to see another doctor on the same day.  Do I have to pay another consultation?

Yes.  Some Insurances do not pay consultation fees.

I am covered under a medical scheme and would like to see a private doctor.  Can I use my Insurance card?

The Insurance card can only be used for other services, e.g. Laboratory Tests, ECG's, X-Rays, etc. but you must pay the doctor's consultation.
NB: Some private doctors do not accept credit.

When I pay the accommodation fees stated on my account, what am I paying for?

You are paying for Housekeeping Services, Dietary Services, 24 hour Nursing Care and Doctor Coverage.  If you were in a private or self-contained room you are also paying for any additional facility available in the room, e.g. air conditioner, self-contained room's private bath.

Why is an "On Call Fee" charged on my account when the hospital is providing a 24 hour service?

The hospital's regular staff is on duty between the hours of 8:00am-4:30pm from Monday-Friday and 8:00am-12:00Noon on Saturdays.  After these times and on Sundays and holidays one member of staff from each service area is placed "on call" i.e. these persons are off duty but make themselves available whenever their services are needed.   The service areas that have persons on call include, X-Ray, Pharmacy, Laboratory and Surgery Team.  The "on call" fee you see on your account is for calling out these persons.

When the doctor has discharged me, why can I not just pay my account and leave immediately?

When a patient is discharged the following things have to be completed:

The nurse has to

to sign off  your chart.

see that all your prescriptions are filled, including those which may have been just ordered by your doctor for you to take home.

ensure that all X-Rays, Dressings and Laboratory tests have been completed.

notify the Dietary Department of your discharge.

The Accounts section has to ensure that all charges and all your payments are posted to your account including charges for those services used on the day of discharge.

If I have a refund of money on my account, what documents do I need to walk with in order to uplift the refund?

To uplift the refund, you must walk with some form of identification such as your national registration ID. card or a valid driver's licence or passport and all receipts for payments you made to the account on which the refund is due to you.

If I need to send someone to uplift the refund on my account, can I send my ID. card?

No.  You need to send an authorization letter, authorizing the bearer of the letter, whose name you must state in the letter, to uplift the refund due to you.  This person must walk with some valid form identification such as their national registration ID. card or driver's licence or passport.

Why does the hospital pay refunded money with a cheque and not in cash?

It is the policy of the hospital to pay refunds over one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) with a cheque.  It is a much safer way for both the patient and the hospital.

I have a skin problem.  Is there anyone at the hospital other than a Dermatologist who can help me?

Yes.  We have General Practitioners who are able to deal with skin diseases.

No.  This organization employs Catholic and non-Catholic persons.

Do you have to be a Catholic person in order to receive health care at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital?

No.  As part of its mission, this hospital gives care to the sick, regardless of their religious beliefs.
